Chapter Fourteen

Secret Lovers

By the end of the evening, I had managed to visit the agency responsible for the adoption of the four babies on my list. For the most part, the agency gave me the same bureaucracy bullshit: “We’re sorry. We are not allowed to reveal any information concerning adoptions.” Cutting through the red tape was proving to be more complicated than I had thought.

My call for help was answered sooner than I dared to hope. Apparently, a nice-looking young counselor at the agency observed my sad expression and offered his services. I resisted his attempt at being a Good Samaritan, giving him the “Nigga, please,” look, but he made a gallant effort to make me smile.

Contemplating my next move, I said, “I don’t have time for any bullshit.” I put my hand around my midsection and stared into his eyes.

“I’ve always admired a fine woman with such an extensive vocabulary.”

I know this nigga ain’t trying to clown me. “Nigga, fuck you. You tight-ass niggas always want to act like you’re better than everybody else. Get the fuck out of my way.”

“What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong is that your ass is about to get slapped for invading my space,” I said, putting my fingers up in his face.

“Relax,” he said. His voice was soft and hesitant, but when you are the head nigga in charge, you don’t have to get hyped about things.

“Listen, this ain’t the time for a friendly talk. I’m looking for help in locating my daughter and I—”

“Follow me into my office. Let’s see what we can do for you.”

I followed him down a long corridor into an office with a sign on the door that read, “Supervisor.”

“By the way, my name is William Raymosa. I’m the supervisor.”

“What a crazy way to meet. My name is Mita Cruz, and I’m searching for my daughter,” I said while staring at him.

“If you don’t mind me asking you, Ms. Cruz, how old are you? Because you look fairly young to be searching for a daughter.”

“Mr. Raymosa, a woman never tells her age. Nevertheless, I’m 42 years old. I had my daughter when I was 14 years old. So, how can you help me? Or are you just wasting my time?”

“I could help you. But by now, I’m sure you are familiar with the procedures, right?”

“Yes, I’m familiar with them.”

“So you do understand that any help I give you never came from me,” he said with a concerned smile.

“I understand. Whatever help you give me will be kept a secret.”

“So that means we got an understanding, right?”

“We do. What do I have to do for this help?”

“Nothing. I know how biased the system can be. I sympathize with you.”

This nigga is up to no good, offering me help for nothing. I know he don’t think I’m that slow. William, in the seat across from me, was watching me with a bewildered smile. “Are you this helpful to everyone?” I asked.

He nodded vigorously. “What’s wrong with helping someone in need?”

“Nothing.”

Never once did he crack for pussy, and he treated me like a human being instead of a piece of ass.
